JEALOUSY

The next morning, when I rolled over in bed, my mind grasped the significance of yesterday’s events with an accelerated charge to my chest. Each scene unfolded, simultaneous to a brisk heartbeat. Thu-dump— the fairytale fountain. Thu-dump— the butterfly garden. Thu-dump—my confession to Mari.— Thu-dump—Stefan. thu-dump, thu-dump, thu-dump. My head leaned towards the melodic humming from the kitchen.

“Why so happy?” I mumbled. My head throbbed from the massive amounts of tears shed only hours ago. Piecing things together, I remembered Stefan’s promise and shot out of bed. The cold windowpane, chilled from an early rain, should have stunned my warm skin, but I didn’t care as I scanned the walkway. Nobody appeared. Did I dream it?

“Was it real?” I turned towards Mari who swept the kitchen floor with a wide grin I hadn’t seen since Cade’s last visit. “Did I really see Stefan?”

She stopped and set the broom against the counter. Meeting me at the window, she reached for my hands lovingly. “I believe so.” Her countenance radiated.

“Why are you so cheery?” My eyes narrowed with curiosity.

Mari held her tongue for a brief moment, but her eyes glowed. “I thought you abandoned me.” Her clasp on my hands tightened. “I thought you left me because you didn’t want me anymore. When you told me what happened last night, it was life-changing.”

“Why would you ever think that?” The very idea sent heartbreaking pangs through my chest.

“Because all those years I didn’t see you, I thought it was because of me.”

“Oh, Mari.” My spirit melted with an urgency to explain. “I’m so sorry you felt that way. It isn’t true. I couldn’t take you with me. To risk your life would have been unforgiveable, especially after what happened.” One arm slipped around her shoulders and pulled her in for a hug. “Then Stefan . . . his rejection paralyzed me. I didn’t believe I deserved to live, much less care for anyone else.”

“I had no idea you’d been through so much. I understand now.”

“I never told anyone the whole story, but now you know everything about my past.”

Mari beamed. “And it’s made all the difference to me.” She kissed me on the cheek. “I’m so glad we’re together now.”

“Me too.” As we released, my body pulled to the window once more, a few passers-by but no Stefan. What if he only said he would come but never really meant it?

“Ella, now that we’re being honest with each other . . .” Mari went to the kitchen to heat a kettle of water.

“Yes . . .” Although I knew there was one very big secret I kept concealed, my job details could never be disclosed to her.

“I have a confession to make.” Mari turned around and lowered her head. She appeared legitimately concerned about my response.

“Okay,” I encouraged. What will sweet Mari have to confess that could upset me?

She fumbled with the hem of her blouse as she spoke. “I . . . I’m actually not sure how to say this.”

“Just spit it out.
