JEALOUSY
The next morning, when I rolled over in bed, my mind grasped the significance of yesterdayâs events with an accelerated charge to my chest. Each scene unfolded, simultaneous to a brisk heartbeat. Thu-dumpâ the fairytale fountain. Thu-dumpâ the butterfly garden. Thu-dumpâmy confession to Mari.â Thu-dumpâStefan. thu-dump, thu-dump, thu-dump. My head leaned towards the melodic humming from the kitchen.
âWhy so happy?â I mumbled. My head throbbed from the massive amounts of tears shed only hours ago. Piecing things together, I remembered Stefanâs promise and shot out of bed. The cold windowpane, chilled from an early rain, should have stunned my warm skin, but I didnât care as I scanned the walkway. Nobody appeared. Did I dream it?
âWas it real?â I turned towards Mari who swept the kitchen floor with a wide grin I hadnât seen since Cadeâs last visit. âDid I really see Stefan?â
She stopped and set the broom against the counter. Meeting me at the window, she reached for my hands lovingly. âI believe so.â Her countenance radiated.
âWhy are you so cheery?â My eyes narrowed with curiosity.
Mari held her tongue for a brief moment, but her eyes glowed. âI thought you abandoned me.â Her clasp on my hands tightened. âI thought you left me because you didnât want me anymore. When you told me what happened last night, it was life-changing.â
âWhy would you ever think that?â The very idea sent heartbreaking pangs through my chest.
âBecause all those years I didnât see you, I thought it was because of me.â
âOh, Mari.â My spirit melted with an urgency to explain. âIâm so sorry you felt that way. It isnât true. I couldnât take you with me. To risk your life would have been unforgiveable, especially after what happened.â One arm slipped around her shoulders and pulled her in for a hug. âThen Stefan . . . his rejection paralyzed me. I didnât believe I deserved to live, much less care for anyone else.â
âI had no idea youâd been through so much. I understand now.â
âI never told anyone the whole story, but now you know everything about my past.â
Mari beamed. âAnd itâs made all the difference to me.â She kissed me on the cheek. âIâm so glad weâre together now.â
âMe too.â As we released, my body pulled to the window once more, a few passers-by but no Stefan. What if he only said he would come but never really meant it?
âElla, now that weâre being honest with each other . . .â Mari went to the kitchen to heat a kettle of water.
âYes . . .â Although I knew there was one very big secret I kept concealed, my job details could never be disclosed to her.
âI have a confession to make.â Mari turned around and lowered her head. She appeared legitimately concerned about my response.
âOkay,â I encouraged. What will sweet Mari have to confess that could upset me?
She fumbled with the hem of her blouse as she spoke. âI . . . Iâm actually not sure how to say this.â
âJust spit it out.
